58th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women reflects on MDGs, looks towards the post-2015 agenda

Focusing on the priority theme “Challenges and achievements in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals for women and girls,” the session also addressed the post-2015 development agenda. UN-NGLS co-organizes CSW58 side event on Care and Sustainable Economy in the Post-2015 Development Agenda

arton4415.jpgAlong with Development Alternatives with Women for a New Era (DAWN), the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, and the Permanent Missions of Uruguay and Germany, UN-NGLS co-convened a side event on 17 March, “Care and Sustainable Economy in the Post-2015 Development Agenda.” This event brought together government and civil society representatives for a focused discussion on how care work affects the lives of women and girls; the relationship between care work and development; and feminist priorities related to women’s unpaid care work in the post-2015 development agenda.

At PGA’s Thematic Debate on Water, Sanitation and Sustainable Energy, civil society calls for a rights-based approach to delivery of these essential services

arton4401On 18-19 February, the President of the General Assembly, H.E. Dr. John W. Ashe, hosted a Thematic Debate on Water, Sanitation and Sustainable Energy – the first of six thematic debates and high-level events that he will host between February and June to provide a platform for Member States and other stakeholders to set the stage for the post-2015 development agenda. The President of the General Assembly was joined by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and WaterAid Deputy Director Girish Menon for the opening ceremony, and by Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson for the closing ceremony. Dr. Menon reflected on the OWG discussions, provided insight on UN Women’s objectives moving forward, and offered advice to civil society organizations as they look towards CSW58 and the continued deliberations towards the post-2015 development agenda.

President of the General Assembly briefs civil society on his six events

arton4403On 6 February, the President of the General Assembly, H.E. Dr. John Ashe, conducted an interactive briefing for civil society at UN Headquarters to discuss six events that he will host between February and June 2014 on his chosen theme for the 68th session of the General Assembly, "the post-2015 development agenda: setting the stage." The GA President will convene these three high-level events and three thematic debates to promote greater engagement with Member States and all relevant stakeholders to support the elaboration of the post-2015 development agenda. For the interactive briefing with civil society, the GA President was joined by Deputy Secretary-General H.E. Mr. Jan Eliasson.
