The 13th Infopoverty World Conference: Innovation, nation-building and the empowerment of people

Organized by OCCAM (Observatory for Cultural and Audiovisual Communication), the European Parliament and the Infopoverty Institute at the University of Oklahoma, the two-day conference focused on ways to reduce poverty and empower people through technological innovations, governance, nation-building and the strengthening of civil society.

UNISDR releases “Synthesis Report on Consultations on the Post-2015 Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction”

arton4282Following UN General Assembly Resolution 67/209, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) was requested to facilitate the development of a post-2015 framework for disaster risk reduction (referred to as Hyogo Framework for Action 2 or HFA2). [1] Since the consultative process was launched in March 2012, governments and wide-range of stakeholders have carried out targeted consultations at global, regional, national and local levels and have communicated their views through the National HFA Monitor, online dialogues and other mechanisms.

UNCTAD: Least Developed Countries Report 2013

On 20 November, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) launched the Least Developed Countries Report for 2013, presenting its annual analysis on the state of the world’s poorest countries. OWG on SDGs announces dates for five formal decision-making sessions in 2014

arton4385On 13 December, the OWG Co-Chairs announced dates for five formal decision-making sessions that will take place after the conclusion of its eight initial stocktaking sessions, from March through July 2014:

3-7 March
31 March - 4 April
5-9 May
2-6 June
14-18 July

In addition to these formal sessions, informal meetings will be conducted; the informal meetings will be “facilitative consultations” and decisions will only be made in formal sessions.

Non-State actors engage in an interactive discussion with the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development Financing

arton4382From 2-6 December 2013 at UN Headquarters in New York, the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development Financing (ICESDF) began substantive discussions on its mandate originating from Rio+20 to propose “options on an effective sustainable development financing strategy to facilitate the mobilization of resources and their effective use in achieving sustainable development objectives.” The ICESDF will submit its report to the General Assembly by September 2014.

Deadline Extended - Call for contributions: Human rights impact of fiscal and tax policy

The Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, Magdalena Sepúlveda Carmona, will submit a report concerning the human rights impact of fiscal and tax policy at the 26th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (June 2014).

The Special Rapporteur is calling for contributions from national human rights institutions, civil society organizations, individuals living in poverty and social exclusion and other relevant stakeholders in the form of research studies, reports and examples of relevant policies.

Answers, if possible, in English, Spanish or French should be sent in hard copy or electronic format no later than 20 December 2013 (details below).
