Carta de la Sociedad Civil al Secretario General de las Naciones Unidas a proposito de la Cumbre sobre los Objetivos de Desarrollo del Milenio

Una coalicin internacional e intersectorial de la sociedad civil que representa alrededor de 170 organizaciones y redes de todo el mundo, ha enviado una carta al Secretario General de las Naciones Unidas, Ban Ki-Moon, con el fin de realizar una serie de recomendaciones para la Reunin Plenaria de Alto Nivel sobre Objetivos de Desarrollo del Milenio (ODM) que se llevar a cabo en septiembre de este ao. Esta coalicin intenta llamar la atencin sobre las desigualdades que existen entre las metas, las regiones y los grupos sociales a la hora de producir resultados, lo que retrasa el proceso hacia los ODM. El pedido no slo es por una concepcin integral de los objetivos sino por un enfoque renovado de stos, de las regiones y de las personas que han sido desatendidas.

UN General Assembly approves creation of an Intergovernmental Science Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services

arton3177At the end of the International Year of Biodiversity, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution that allows for the creation of an Intergovernmental Science Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). IPBES, which will be based on a similar model as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), will not only provide scientific knowledge on the rapid disappearance of a great number species and the erosion of ecosystems; it will also try to facilitate the process that will translate this knowledge into concrete actions to prevent further biodiversity loss; and to inform political decision-makers and the general public. It will further try to bring consistency in the great variety of UN reports and assessments on biodiversity and ecosystems, as well as of those from research centres and universities across the globe.

UNFPA: New Manual on Human Rights-based Approach to Programming

UNHCR: High Commissioner’s Dialogue on Protection Challenges: "Protection Gaps and Responses"

arton3154This year, the Fourth High Commissioner’s Dialogue on Protection Challenges, organized by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, will take place on 8-9 December in Geneva and will touch upon the theme "Protection Gaps and Responses". As such, it will discuss gaps in the existing international protection framework for forcibly displaced and stateless people, as well as possible ways to respond. In particular, this year’s Dialogue will focus on international cooperation, burden sharing and comprehensive regional approaches, as well as on the reduction of statelessness and the protection of stateless persons.

55th session UN Commission on the Status of Women: NGO registration and parallel events

arton3135From 22 February to 4 March 2011, the 55th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) will take place at UN Headquarters in New York. This year the Commission will prioritize discussions on women’s and girls’ access and participation to education, training, science and technology, including the promotion of women’s equal access to full employment and decent work. To this end, it will organize a high-level round table to exchange experiences, lessons learned and good practices; an interactive expert panel to identify key policy initiatives; and an interactive expert panel which will focus on capacity-building for gender mainstreaming. These interactive events should support Member States in negotiating agreed conclusions (new policy recommendations) to accelerate implementation of existing commitments, including those in the Beijing Platform for Action.
