arton3626

In August 2010, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched the High-Level Panel on Global Sustainability that brought together leading global policymakers, private sector and civil society experts in order to formulate a new blueprint for sustainable growth and low-carbon prosperity for all on a planet under increasing strain, not least from climate change.

The Panel was led by two co-chairs, Finnish President Tarja Halonen and South African President Jacob Zuma. Members included high-ranking government officials, representatives from the private sector and civil society from both developed and developing countries. Their final report was issued at the end of January 2012 and informed relevant intergovernmental discussions, such as the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20).

At the request of the GSP, UN-NGLS facilitated civil society engagement with the Panel starting in March 2011. This engagement included civil society consultations in March and November 2011, two meetings between civil society representatives and Panel members, and the participation of civil society in several GSP briefings to UN Member States.

The first summary report focuses on sustainable development policy and addresses employment, the acceleration of gender equality, sustainable economic policy, and indicators beyond Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
