Solutions Summit - 21 September 2016

Solutions Summit header

The second annual Solutions Summit took place at UN Headquarters in New York on the evening of 21 September 2016 during UN General Assembly week. Solutions Summit 2016 was a catalytic gathering that highlighted projects which advance the objectives of one or more of these upcoming global Summits and Conferences:

> UN Summit for Refugees and Migrants - UNHQ NY - September 2016
> UN Habitat III Conference - Ecuador - October 2016
> UN Climate Change Conference - Morocco - November 2016
> Open Government Partnership Global Summit - France - December 2017
> UN Oceans Conference - June 2017

The purpose of Solutions Summit is two-fold: 1) to lift up exceptional innovators -- technologists, engineers, scientists, and others -- who are developing solutions that address one or more of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); and 2) to catalyze a grassroots effort, where communities scout and convene resources around solution-makers. The first Solutions Summit in 2015 immediately followed the conclusion of the UN Sustainable Development Summit at which UN Member States adopted the SDGs. It showed that people already have extraordinary solutions in progress to our most complex challenges.

WHAT ARE THE INTENDED OUTCOMES?

During the Solutions Summit, a group of selected global innovators will be invited to give a 'lightning talk' outlining their breakthrough efforts to a juxtaposed audience of senior policymakers who have the means to pave solid regulatory foundations, investors who care deeply about long-term change and impact, and industry leaders who are able to deploy quickly and at scale. The gathering will serve as a catalyst to convene resources and talent around solution-makers.

WHO IS ORGANIZING THE EFFORT?

Solutions Summit is led by the UN Foundation, the UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS) and the Global Innovation Exchange, in collaboration with the SDG Philanthropy Platform, Global Entrepreneurship Council, and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network. UN-NGLS is coordinating the open and transparent application and selection process to curate solutions to be featured during the Solutions Summit. United States Chief Technololgy Officer Megan Smith and UN SDG Global Advocate Alaa Murabit will co-moderate the event. The event is sponsored by Qualcomm, Guggenheim Partners, Mastercard, and Tencent.

10 SOLUTIONS SELECTED

The Selection Committee agreed a short-list of 30 solutions from 438 applications received, and the Solutions Summit lead organizers selected the following 10 extraordinary solution-makers:

Humanitarian Tracker
REFUNITE
Atmocean
Darewin / Great Whale Conservancy
BenBen
AIME
ayzh
doctHERs
ECOLOO Group
Red Dot Foundation (Safecity)

The leaders of these projects - a regionally and gender balanced group - will each give a 'lightning talk' outlining their breakthrough efforts at UN Headquarters on 21 September. The audience is curated to convene resources and talent around the solution-makers: senior policymakers who have the means to pave solid regulatory foundations, philanthropists and investors who care deeply about long-term change and impact, and industry leaders who are able to deploy quickly and at scale.

FOR ALL APPLICANTS

Everyone who submitted an application could select to have their profile and project information uploaded to the Global Innovation Exchange. This platform enables everyone to connect with a community of more than 10,000 innovators, entrepreneurs, and investors addressing global challenges. All who selected to participate will have a profile created within a few weeks.

THE DEADLINES TO SUBMIT A SOLUTION OR APPLY FOR THE SELECTION COMMITTEE WERE:

21 August 2016:  Apply to be a part of the Selection Committee
28 August 2016:  Submit proposals for inclusion in the Solutions Summit
