On 23 March 2017, the President of the 71st UN General Assembly, Ambassador Peter Thomson, in collaboration with the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Ms. Patricia Espinosa, will convene Member States, the UN System, and stakeholders at United Nations Headquarters in a High-level Action Event on Climate Change and the Sustainable Development Agenda. At the request of the Office of the President of the General Assembly (OPGA), UN-NGLS is facilitating a process to identify two civil society speakers, one social entrepreneur speaker, and stakeholders wishing to attend as observers.

Apply to attend 17 February High-level Meeting commemorating International Convention for Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance

In accordance with UN General Assembly resolution 70/160 of 10 February 2016, the President of the General Assembly will convene a high-level meeting to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance. The meeting will be held on 17 February 2017 at UN Headquarters in New York. This important event will provide an opportunity to review the positive impact of the Convention during these first ten years and to discuss ways and best practices to prevent enforced disappearances, to combat impunity and to promote and protect all human rights for all. The program of work includes three segments: the Opening Segment, the Plenary Segment, and a Panel Discussion that will include interactive dialogue. At the request of the Office of the President of the General Assembly, UN-NGLS is facilitating a process for civil society to apply to attend this special event as observers. In recognition of the fundamental interlinkages between the 2030 Agenda and Sustaining Peace, the President of the General Assembly will convene a High-level Dialogue entitled "Building Sustainable Peace for All: Synergies between the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustaining Peace Agenda" on 24 January 2017 at UN Headquarters in New York, with the participation of the President of the Security Council, the President of the Economic and Social Council, and the Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission. At the request of the Office of the President of the General Assembly (OPGA), the UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS) is facilitating a process to identify two civil society speakers, and other civil society attendees wishing to be considered as observers for this event.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon meets with civil society as Paris Agreement on climate change enters into force

The Paris Agreement to address climate change, adopted by world leaders last December at the Climate Conference in Paris (COP21), officially entered into force on 4 November. To commemorate this historic day, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon invited representatives of civil society organizations to a 45-minute meeting with him at UN Headquarters in New York. This meeting provided civil society groups with the opportunity to share with the Secretary-General how their organizations will contribute to the objectives of the Paris Agreement, as well as their visions and concerns. The Executive Office of the Secretary-General and UN-NGLS co-organized the meeting. 11 civil society representatives spoke during the session, moderated by Dr. David Nabarro, Special Advisor to the Secretary-General on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Climate Change. UN Secretary-General Staff Awards 2016 finalists include OPGA, UN-NGLS NY & DGACM team for UN Secretary-General candidates process

Collage Full Team 2A team comprised of staff from the Office of the President of the UN General Assembly, the UN-NGLS New York Office, and the Department of General Assembly Conference Management (DGACM) were honored on United Nations Staff Day 2016 as UN Secretary-General Staff Award finalists, for work together on the process for the selection of the next UN Secretary-General. The team was recognized in the category "Managing Change" for achieving "an unprecedented standard of transparency and inclusivity for the process," building on a mandate provided by UN Member States to the President of the General Assembly. We extend our highest respect to President of the 70th Session of the General Assembly Mr. Mogens Lykketoft, and President of the 71st Session of the General Assembly Ambassador Peter Thomson for their principled leadership in this regard. We thank UN Member States for their support of a more transparent and inclusive process which included civil society.

Civil society questions for UN Secretary-General Candidates

The President of the General Assembly (PGA) organized informal dialogues between UN Member States and candidates for UN Secretary-General. The Office of the PGA requested UN-NGLS to facilitate a process with civil society to provide questions that can be asked to candidates during these dialogues. Civil society was invited to contribute questions via Twitter or Instagram using #UNSGcandidates, or send them via an online form here. More than 1500 questions were received from over 100 countries. Two to three questions from civil society were asked of each candidate during their UNGA dialogue. The first round of dialogues with nine candidates took place 12-14 April 2016; a second round of dialogues took place with two new candidates on 7 June; a third round took place with one candidate on 14 July, and a fourth with one candidate on 3 October. A Global Townhall took place in UN General Assembly Hall on 12 July with all candidates, organized by the PGA in partnership with Al Jazeera media network. The Global Townhall included two questions from civil society. In addition, all candidates have been asked to answer 10 questions from civil society posted on the President of the General Assembly's web site here. High-level Civil Society Event of the UN Summit for Refugees and Migrants

UN-NGLS organized the High-level Civil Society Event of the UN Summit for Refugees and Migrants on 19 September 2016 from 10:00am-12:30am in Conference Room 7 at UN Headquarters in New York. This event provided a unique space during the Summit, enabling refugees and migrants to dialogue with UN Member States about the commitments made in the Summit outcome document. The opening session had a special focus on the perspectives of young refugees from Syria on issues for resettlement, inclusion, and the Summit commitment to ensure that all children are in education within a few months of initial displacement, in safe learning environments. The opening session programme included the participation of: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon; Ms. Yusra Mardini, 18 year-old Syrian refugee now living in Germany, who swam for 3 hours in the Aegean Sea to push a boat to shore with 20 other refugees on board, and then became a swimmer as part of the Olympic Refugee Team; Ms. Muzoon Almellehan, 17 year-old Syrian refugee who lived in Za'atari and Azraq refugee camps in Jordan, and is now a campaigner with the Malala Fund; Lana (via live videoconference), 11 year-old Syrian refugee living in Jordan who shared her dream to attend school via video sent by Save the Children to UN-NGLS in July; Ms. Megan Smith, United States Chief Technology Officer; and Ms. Kelly Clements, Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees. By 12 September: Apply to attend 21 September Paris Climate Change Agreement Ratification Ceremony at UN Headquarters

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has invited leaders from all countries to attend a special event on 21 September 2016 at UN Headquarters in New York from 8:00-9:00am to deposit their instruments of ratification, acceptance, approval or accession to the Paris Agreement on climate change. The event will also provide an opportunity to other countries to publicly commit to joining or ratifying the agreement before the end of 2016. The agreement will enter into force 30 days after at least 55 countries, accounting for 55 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, deposit their instruments of ratification or acceptance with the Secretary-General. It is expected that the September event will help efforts to secure early entry into force of the agreement. At the request of the Executive Office of the Secretary-General, UN-NGLS is leading a process for civil society to apply to attend this event as observers.

Civil society speakers selected for UN Summit for Refugees and Migrants

On 19 September 2016, the UN General Assembly will host a Summit at UN Headquarters in New York to address large movements of refugees and migrants, with the aim of bringing countries together behind a more humane and coordinated approach. At the request of the Office of the President of the UN General Assembly, UN-NGLS and UN DESA are facilitating an open and participatory process to identify attendees and speakers for this event and its preparatory process. The civil society speakers for the Summit have now been selected by the President of the General Assembly.

Apply for Selection Committee or to Attend 4th Meeting of UN Inter-agency & Expert Group on SDG Indicators in Addis Ababa (20-21 October 2016)


At the request of the UN DESA Statistics Division, UN-NGLS is facilitating an open, transparent and participatory application process to identify representatives from civil society organizations, academia and the private sector to attend the plenary session of the Fourth Meeting of the Inter-agency and Expert Group on Sustainable Development Goal Indicators, taking place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 20-21 October 2016. Apply for the Stakeholder Selection Committee by 12 September, or apply to attend the meeting by 17 September.
